چکیده

In this paper we discuss the significance of Vowel Onset Point (VOP) for speech recognition in particular, and for accurate speech analysis in general. Vowel onset point is the instant at which the vowel part starts in a ConsonantVowel (CV) utterance. The syllable-like CV utterances are basic units for both speech production and speech recognition. Recognition performance of isolated utterances of CV units improves significantly, if the parameters/features are extracted using VOPs as anchor points. Even manual identification of VOP requires acoustic cues specific to each subgroup of CV units. We present some acoustic cues which help in manual identification of VOPs in CV utterances. A database of CV units with VOPs marked, together with the knowledge of acoustic cues, will be useful to develop an algorithm for automatic detection of VOPs.

Non-Local Estimation of Speech Signal for Vowel Onset Point Detection in Varied Environments

Vowel onset point (VOP) is an important information extensively employed in speech analysis and synthesis. Detecting the VOPs in a given speech sequence, independent of the text contexts and recording environments, is a challenging area of research. Performance of existing VOP detection methods have not yet been extensively studied in varied environmental conditions. In this paper, we have expl...

Syllable synchronization and the P-center in Cantonese

In speech rhythm analysis, it is important to localize the perceptual center (P-center) of syllables in order to establish a basis for measuring syllabic duration. P-center research has focused primarily on Germanic languages, for which syllables tend to begin with multiple consonants. In Cantonese, the syllable-initial position contains no more than one consonant, making it less prone to durat...

Acoustic Analysis of Persian EFL Learners' Pronunciation of English Vowels

This paper reports the results of an experimental study on non-native production of English vowels. Two groups of Persian EFL learners varying in language proficiency were tested on their ability to produce the nine plain vowels of American English. Vowel production accuracy was assessed by means of acoustic measurements. Ladefoged and Maddison’s (1996) F1 F2 measurements for American English v...

Effect of Vowel Auditory Training on the Speech-In-Noise Perception among Older Adults with Normal Hearing

Introduction: Aging reduces the ability to understand speech in noise. Hearing rehabilitation is one of the ways to help older people communicate effectively. This study aimed to investigate the effect of vowel auditory training on the improvement of speech-in-noise (SIN) perception among elderly listeners.   Materials and Methods: This study was conducted on 36 elderly ...
